As you know, yesterday morning was the annual UH Spring Cleanup Day sponsored by the UH City Council and the Community Relations Committee chaired by Rosanne Hopson. While we did not keep a count of those who dropped off trash and recycling items, I believe we had greater attendance than last year in spite of the discouraging weather.
We filled one refuse bin completely full and another about ⅓ full. A trailer full of hazardous waste (household chemicals, paints, etc.) was taken to the Iowa City hazardous waste materials center at the landfill by Brennan McGrath. Thanks to Jim Lane for helping neighbors transport items from their homes. At the end of the day, useable left-over swap items were recycled by donating them to the Crowded Closet (thanks to Wally Heitman) and a few items were donated to the Iowa City Animal Shelter. A number of still useable items collected at a “swap table” were taken home by neighbors to continue their use. This all added up to a very successful cleanup day.
Thanks to Steve Smith, Johnson county Refuse, and his drivers for being so helpful and cooperative. As usual, they provided excellent support. The cleanup day could not have been such a success without our dedicated neighborhood volunteers. A special thanks to the following neighbors for making the cleanup day a terrific success.
It makes me proud to be a UH neighbor.
