Keep University Heights Beautiful Day- May 1, 2010
(SPRING CLEAN-UP)

The City will sponsor a Clean-Up Day for residents on Saturday, May 1, 2010.
There will be two dumpsters provided for disposing of unwanted items.  Cumbersome items should be broken down or dismantled.
No brush or yard waste will be accepted
.

The dumpsters will be located in the city parking area of Marietta Avenue.  They will be available at 8:30 a.m. and will close when they are full.
No Early Birds Please

Containers will be available for collecting other items including:

BATTERIES
FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS
HARDBOUND BOOKS
(INCLUDING ENCYCLOPEDIAS)
We will collect lithium and NiCd batteries.
If you have a battery that came out of a camera, camcorder, calculator, watch, computer, hearing aid, pacemaker, pager, power tool, lawn mower, hand-held vacuum, or cell phone - it is probably a lithium or NiCd battery.
We will also take batteries for cars, mopeds, and motorcycles.
Alkaline Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc) cannot be recycled at this time.

Bring compact fluorescent light bulbs, and fluorescent linear tubes, u-tubes, and circline bulbs for disposal.

We are recycling hardbound books that are no longer wanted.  We can also accommodate encyclopedia sets.
CELL PHONES

PLASTIC BAGS
As a fundraiser, the Iowa City Senior Center collects unwanted cell phones and ships them to a recycler.  Perhaps you have seen their drop box at Fareway.  They also take small electronics, such as laptop computers (NOT desktop computers), digital cameras, mp3 players and video game consoles.  We will be collecting these items for the Senior Center, which keeps dangerous materials out of the landfill and helps the Center raise operational funding.     If you have an over-supply of plastic bags, here’s your chance to get rid of them.

CRISIS CENTER FOOD BANK

In conjunction with this event we are sponsoring a food drive for the Johnson County Crisis Center’s Food Bank.  We will have containers for the donations.

The Crisis Center can accept any unopened food item, as well as hygiene products, cleaning products, paper products, baby food and formula, and diapers.

Their Top Ten Most Needed Items right now are:

1. Monetary Donations
2. Canned Fruit
3. Fruit Juice
4. Canned Vegetables
5. Canned Tomato Products
6. Canned Meat
7. Soups & Stews
8. Rice & Pasta
9. Diapers
10. Toilet Paper

Items they do not accept: open food items, unlabeled food items, homemade or home-canned items, razors and knives, products containing a high amount of alcohol, furniture and household items, or clothing,

FREE STUFF

We will have tables available for residents to leave “gently used” serviceable items.  Residents are also free to take items home from this area.  (No clothes please.)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The City is paying for the dumpsters, but relying on volunteers for help.  If you can help out, even for a short while, phone Pat Yeggy at 338-6252.  Volunteers with pick-up trucks are doubly appreciated.

SURVEY

ELECTRONIC WASTE

We would take electronic waste if enough residents tell us that they could use this service.  Electronic waste includes computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, TVs, stereos, copiers, cables, networking hardware, and other small electronic items. These items contain lead and other substances which are harmful to the environment if disposed of improperly.

Regular fees would apply, and would be collected at the staging area.

ELECTRONIC WASTE COLLECTION FEES (CASH OR CHECK ONLY)

$5.00 per computer or TV with 18” screen or smaller
$10.00 per computer or TV with larger than 18” screen

$0.25/lb. bulk e-waste (including monitors)
$2.00 minimum – less than 20 lbs. miscellaneous e-waste

Providing this additional service would add more to the total cost than was allocated.  If we learn that there is a need for this, we will consider doing it later, possibly even this year.  Phone Pat Yeggy at 338-6252 or contact any Councilmember.
