Hydrants and Winter Fire Safety

Red fire hydrant partially buried in snow

In case of fire, firefighters need to be able to get to hydrants quickly to protect people, pets, and property.

Keep the hydrant closest to your property clear and help out neighbors by clearing hydrants anywhere in town.

  • Clear snow 3 feet away from the hydrant in every direction.
  • Clear a path to the street.
  • Make sure firefighters can easily locate and work around the hydrant.

Hydrants in University Heights are marked on the map below. If you would like to clear a specific hydrant this winter, contact a University Heights police officer by leaving a message with the Communications Center (319-356-6800).

You do not have to sign up: just go out and clear.

Firefighters, your neighbors, and the City appreciate your community service.
